D-Uber / Van Driver

Volunteer D-Uber / Van Drivers play a critical role in our program by providing safe, reliable transportation for dogs attending Blue Coat Academy (BCA). Affectionately called the “D-Uber,” this van ensures that every dog receives consistent training multiple times per week. It supports Host Homes and Volunteer Dog Trainers, who provide homes for the dogs, while also reducing barriers for volunteers.

Responsibilities of a Volunteer D-Uber / Van Driver?

  • Transport dogs safely to and from Blue Coat Academy according to the assigned route and schedule
  • Handle dogs calmly and confidently using Helping Paws–approved training methods
  • Use designated Helping Paws equipment, including collars, leashes, crates, and vehicles
  • Confirm successful pick-ups and drop-offs as instructed by staff
  • Immediately report any incidents, including injuries, illnesses, accidents, or escapes

Time Commitment & Scheduling

There is no minimum commitment to volunteer as a D-Uber driver. Shifts typically last 1–2 hours, depending on the route, and volunteers may sign up as their schedules allow—even once or twice a month makes a meaningful impact.

Typical schedule details:

  • Morning routes often begin around 7:30 AM
  • All dogs should arrive at BCA by 10:00 AM
  • Dogs are typically picked up by 5:30 PM
  • Dog school currently runs Monday–Friday

Volunteers may coordinate split shifts if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many dogs will I transport?
The number varies by shift. Some routes include 1–2 dogs, while others may have 4–5 dogs. Most dogs live within 25 minutes of Helping Paws, though they are spread throughout the metro area.

Can I bring a ride-along guest?
Yes. Ride-along passengers (spouse, child, or friend) are allowed. Guests may not enter volunteer homes during pick-up or drop-off unless they complete a background check. Otherwise, guests must remain in the vehicle.
Personal pet dogs are not allowed during D-Uber shifts.

Can I take photos?
Yes—photos are encouraged! Volunteers may take photos of service dogs in training and share them on social media to help spread the word about Helping Paws and our volunteer opportunities.

Insurance & Vehicle Support

Helping Paws provides vehicle insurance coverage for volunteers driving the D-Uber van. Volunteers must submit a copy of their valid driver’s license and follow all safety protocols.

Staff work to keep the van fueled, but if gas is needed during a shift, a staff member will provide a Helping Paws credit card. Receipts should be returned to staff.

We also welcome volunteers who can help bring the van in for oil changes. Helping Paws covers the cost—and you’ll receive a coffee or treat as a thank-you.
