The Hortman Heroes Fund

Helping Paws is honored to announce the creation of a fund celebrating the lives and legacy of Representative Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark, and their beloved dog, Gilbert.

The Hortman Heroes Fund—In Honor of Melissa, Mark, and Gilbert Hortman—will support Helping Paws programs that place service dogs with veterans and first responders with service-related PTSD.

“Our parents deeply treasured their relationship with Helping Paws, and we are so honored to preserve their legacy through The Hortman Heroes Fund,“ says Mark and Melissa Hortman’s children, Sophie and Colin Hortman. “We want to extend our gratitude to all those who were moved by their story and contributed to Helping Paws. Our family is committed to the work that Helping Paws is doing, and we look forward to the positive impact that this fund will have in providing healing and support for veterans and first responders.”

To support the fund, please click on the button below and select "The Hortman Heroes Fund" when asked, "Would You Like Your Donation to Go Toward a Specific Helping Paws Area?"

A Community Supporting Helping Paws

Join the Blue Coat Circle! Training and matching an Assistance Dog takes about 2½ years, requires thousands of volunteer hours and an investment of about $30,000. By being a donor, you directly support Helping Paws Assistance Dogs, who ultimately bring improved quality of life, companionship and peace of mind to those in need.

This includes:

  • Training 175+ volunteers who donate 95,000 hours each year
  • Veterinarian bills and other expenses associated with the dogs
  • Lifetime of support to our Graduate Partnerships

The Blue Coat Circle is our new donor appreciation program that allows us to express our deep gratitude for your support while highlighting the impact of our Assistance Dogs. This new program is designed to showcase how your donations fund our entire program: from breeding to foster home training to Graduate placement and follow up care. For more information, click here.
